Pigtailz Junction Sanctuary, located in Scottsville, VA, is the home for over 80 pigs. This is neither a public sanctuary nor a safe house to hold pigs until they are adopted again. This is their final home - never to fear abuse or feel unwanted again!

The majority of these pigs are potbellies. Besides potbellied pigs, Pigtailz Junction is also the home for Ossabaw pigs, Kune-Kune pigs, feral pigs from Arizona and Florida, and farm hogs. Several special needs pigs also find their home with us.

What an awesome pendant. I was looking for fellow artist to feature and found these awesome glass pendants. artist says:

Sparkling 22k Gold horse head, hand painted and kiln fired on fused cobalt blue glass. Set with a gold plated bail. This pendant is approximately 1 inches wide by 1 1/4 inches tall including bail.

Please note that glass is extremely difficult to photograph with color accuracy. While great effort has been made to represent the colors accurately, monitor variances increase the difficulty of accurate colors. Transparent glass also has the ability to change hues based on ambient lighting.

I just spent a bunch of time reading and watching the videos on this site and I love it so informative right to the point. The #1 Reason People Give up their Pigs:
Did you know an unspayed female pig goes into heat every 21 days?
Did you ever smell an unneutered boar? Do you think dogs humping everything is unacceptable behavior? Pigs are 10x worse!
No pig makes a good pet if not spayed/neutered!

This tree has roots that are growing over two rocks that I found on Assateague Island. They are polished smooth from the many years of being in the ocean. Near the roots; is a dragon ready to take flight. In the tree tops is a hawk or eagle keeping an eye out below. The agate is approximately 4" round. Wire, solder, copper & stones comprise this piece. No glue is used at all. Everything is soldered together. There is a wire heart with the letter J which is my signature & truely created from my heart. With this piece is a note card that will say:

Farm Sanctuary Our 2009 Walk Results Are In

The annual Walk for Farm Animals is one of Farm Sanctuary's most important outreach events each year. In addition to educating people about the realities of factory farming, the Walk helps raise money that supports our farm animal protection work, literally saving innocent lives with each dollar raised. Over the years, the Walk has helped to underwrite our mission.

But, honestly, this year we were a little nervous. The economy tanked, people were out of work. We just didn't know if our supporters would be able to be as generous with us as they always have been in the past.

Well, it's my absolute pleasure to be able to report that the Walk raised more money than any previous Walk, and we also had many more people participating.

We raised in excess of $330,000 (gross income), and more than 3600 people took to the streets to send an incredibly powerful message of hope for farm animals.

These tags are truly one of a kind. Lovetostamp hand cut these tags from cardstock that she hand walnut stained! Since she did cut these by hand they are not the exact same size but the difference can't be told unless helf together in a stack! she also cut the corners so they are not perfect but I feel this gives it a great feel and look to them!

Measures 3 1/8 in x 2 1/4in! You will recieve a set of 6! The heart was stamped and embossed with clear powder then I ink over in the pink to fill in the areas that were white! Pig do's and Donts Tips to help Keep Your Pigger Family Healthy

SO I wanted to help you know what to do for your piggers and what to not do to the piggers so this might be a long one here we go.

First question I am getting a lot would be "Winter is coming what should I do to help my pigger stay warm". There are 2 ways to help outside piggers stay warm and safe. You can use Hay in the pigger houses or you can use blankets and heat lamps. now NEVER mix the two. If you use hot lamps do not use hay because of the risk of the hay catching on fire from the heat lamps. Hay works very good because the piggers own body heat is insulated in the hay NEVER use wet hay or moldy hay mold is bad to breath and wet hay takes heat away from the pigger. having more then one pigger in a house allows them to give each other body heat. But as you might kow not all pigs get along. ;8)

Next I get lots of questions about what is god to feed piggers and not feed piggers. Now when it comes to plants pigs seem to know what is very bad for them but please if you know a plant is toxic do not plant it where the pig can get to it. It is not worth the risk. A piglet under a year of age can eat a 1 cup twice a day, This includes the snacks and but you will want to decrease this as the pig ages and doesn't get up and move as much. The most important thing to remember is that your pigs are very intelligent animals and if they are not enriched with things to do they will be come board and start sleeping a lot. This will cause them to put and keep the weight on. So in a days time your piglets should not get over 2 cups of anything to eat. If they graze you have to calculate that in as well and cut back on the pelletsNever free feed a pig, they will eat until the throw up. Make sure they get plenty of exercise to keep them fit and trim. A fat pig is really an unhappy pig and it causes all kinds of health issues.

DO NOT for any reason let your pig get Moth Balls They are very dangerous to you and your piggers they cause cancer in humans and will kill your pigger.

mushrooms can be toxic in a pasture, melarmine from the recalled pet food, any tomato leaves Tomato plants like pepper plants are part of the night shade family they are very toxic to humans and piggers the fruits are fine no plants please.

Not to much starchy foods and limit fruit because of the sugar content. I can tell you I found out the hard way about the fruits. Fruits are jam packed with vitamins HOWEVER the sugar content rots teeth and very fast there is now why to brush there little teeth so the sugar stays on he teeth. I have a pigger that had to have 6 teeth removed (all my pigs are rescues from bad lives so this stuff sadly happenes) a couple weeks later I brought that pigger back to the vet because her face was stil swollen. They had to remove part of her jaw because it died. she is doing fine now and looks great, so please give your piggers veggies not much fruit.

I cannot express how impotant it is to have fresh water for piggers to drinka nd bath in. Besides drinking water (use flat bottomed shallow pans made for watering small stock and put out multiple dishes in case they tip one over.) they need water for cooling off.
A stream, a pond, a wading pool, or a mudhole can all provide the necessary hot weather relief. Pigs cannot sweat or pant; they must have water they can immerse in to cool off. This is essential. Heatstroke is common. And they must have mud. Just water is not enough. Mud provides insect protection, sunscreen and lubrication to prevent scaly skin. For the best pool money can buy go to PAHeartland for their specially manufactured piggy pools. They have soft sides for easy entrance and napping, are low and skid proof so pigs aren't afraid to step into them and are virtually indestructible. Easy to empty and clean every day as well. Recap of the 13th Annual Charlottesville Vegetarian Festival

Despite the generous rain, the 13th Annual Charlottesville Vegetarian Festival attracted several hundred attendees and received a lot of publicity in local papers and on television.

In the chaos of packing up in a downpour, we didn't get our usual tally for the Adoption Fair, but we do know that two of the participating rescue organizations adopted out three deserving animals each. We hope the other organizations had similar success! And Georgie, the rescued potbellied pig from Gallastar Equine Center, was a great ambassador for his species. With his super-affectionate personality and constantly wagging tail, he charmed everyone he met.

We greatly appreciate the support of the Festival sponsors and exhibitors, the dedicated volunteers who worked tirelessly to make the event happen, and the intrepid souls who came to Lee Park to celebrate a humane and healthy lifestyle.

Recommended pig care items to have on hand
Peroxide with a spray top. Very handy for cuts that he won't let you touch.
A water based antibiotic spray such as spectomycin and water. Ask your vet for the antibiotic and the solution strength. Great to have hanging on the fence and handy.
Antihistamine (like Benedryl or Zyrtec). As with any animal, breathing difficulties from allergies can occur. If he is unable to take a pill, mash a Benedryl in a little water to make a paste and smear it in his mouth. Use human dosage. There is a chewable Benedryl that tastes like grape soda for kids.. most pigs will take it.
Aspirin. If he gets a hurt leg or foot or other obvious painful condition aspirin can be used for a day or two . Longer use can be dangerous to the stomach. Never use any other human pain relievers like Ibuprophens. For long term problems like arthritis and other bone and joint problems see the section on Arthritis All PBP vets now recommend that if you use any kind of pain killer, steroidal or non steroidal, you should give a stomach acid reducer such as Prilosec or Ranitidine (both available over the counter) at the same time.
SMZ is the number one used antibiotic on the farm here. Easy to crush, easy to feed in any sandwich, its very effective for a wide range of ills. Tetracyclene and Amoxycillin are two other common antibiotics that are used frequently. Have them on hand and call your vet for dosages and recommendations at the first sign of infection. Another handy drug is Doxycyclene which is a once a day antibiotic which can make medicating a lot less complicated for a pig who hates taking pills.
All pills can be crushed and put into a pill sandwich with mayonnaise or ketchup or jam. You may have to get creative if he decides he doesn't want to take it and vary the sandwich content. Worst case, crush the pill or open the capsule and mix with a tiny amount of liquid, pull it up into a syringe (be sure to remove the needle!!) and just squirt it in his mouth. There are handy feeding syringes for this purpose (See link of the Essentials" page. )
Other sure fire ways to get him to take a pill:I have found most all my pill refusers will change their mind if I roll the pill in a nice big hunk of sugar cookie dough. Buy the refrigerator roll type and it keeps a long time. Other good taste teasers for the finicky medicine taker: Pumpkin pie mix, turkey stuffing mix, and gorgonzola cheese. Or >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Crush it and mix into eggnog or Gatorade Or >>>>>>>>>>>Break into tiny bits and put each bit into a canned peach halve or a fat jelly bean. (Be sure that you NEVER give a pig any pork products. The risk of returning hog cholera to our country is very real today with so much pork coming from Mexico where it is rampant. Ingesting a tiny piece of ham from your plate or a left over slice of pepperoni pizza could bring back this disease that was eradicated 50 years ago. ). Any meats your pig eats should be fully cooked. Ham, pepperoni, salami, and many other pork products are not cooked.. just smoke cured..

Adding a second Pig.
Pigs are herd animals and it is best that they have one of their own kind for companionship. It has no effect on their relationship with you. But it gives them a buddy to sleep with, argue with, and just be with. It increases the quality of their life greatly.
If you already have a pig and decide to add another there are a few things to consider.
First, what is the size and attitude of your pig? If large and aggressive he will be very rough on the newcomer. If large and shy he will still fight but won't be as rough. In general, a young pig is the best choice to add as it is not as threatening to the resident pig and pigs will not hurt a youngster like they will another adult pig.
Almost all meetings between strange pigs result in a fight. Usually it is harmless, a few scratches down their sides and then they become friends. Occasionally they will rip an ear or a lip. Pigs with large tusks should not be mixed without having the tusks cut first. It doesn't seem to make much difference between introducing males to males or females. (Providing they are all neutered; never introduce two unneutered males). The least fighting will occur if the pigs can be put together in an area which neither has claim to. A neutral space. After they have been together for a day or two, then move them back to the regular living area. Do not introduce them INSIDE the house.
One pig will end up being "boss" and from then on there will be no more fuss. If you adopt from the us we will try to make a match that will be agreeable.
Many of a pigs woes can be cured by the addition of another pig. It is a natural condition for them. People, dogs and cats are fine, but another pig is a true kindred spirit. They sleep together and pal around together and fuss with each other, getting many emotional needs filled that we can't fill for them any other way.
If your new pig and the original pig refuse to sleep together at first, give them time. They may need many months before they feel comfortable enough to share their most vulnerable and private space. A tight, well insulated house is necessary in cold climates. These pigs came from a sub tropical environment. Young pigs have little fat to protect them; older pigs, especially in groups or two or more sleeping together can tolerate much more cold. Build a large enough house to accommodate your pig comfortably, but not a lot of space for heat loss. A 6'x6'x4' high makes a good size for one to four pigs. In colder climates where temps drop below 0, insulate all walls, floor and ceiling with standard 3-1/2" fiberglass insulation. Interior and exterior plywood walls. A solid floor of 1" boards or plywood. The door should be faced away from prevailing winds and have 2 heavy rugs for doors, one outside and one inside.

A reflective heat lamp can be suspended or a ceramic light fixture installed for use in heating should temperatures be below zero. Use standard 150 or 200 watt light bulbs, not heat bulbs. Keep light at least 2 feet above the pig.
WARNING. Any kind of light is a fire hazard. To be safe use the special heaters made especially for pigs instead. These are available on line from ENasco and from Jeffers Pet. (See link of the Essentials" page. ). Pig heater, installed on wall so it doesn't get overheated under hay, is shown at right.
Fill the house with straw or hay and keep it 16 inches deep. They will bury themselves under it and be nice and warm. Bedding won't last long as it becomes pulverized and flat so keep a check on it. Add a blanket to the bedding for extra protection. If you live in a severe climate where sub zero is common, it is best to plan an indoor sleeping area. If you live in a farm setting and have a barn, build a house inside the barn and throw hay over it as well as in it. Or give them access, in the dry, to a roll or big pile of hay and they will burrow into it. This is Oliver Before

He is only one year old and had lived in a 8' by 8' pen all his little life. Filthy dirty and spilling his water all the time.......peeing in the water and then drinking it. The food we saw in the bowl had soured. Oliver had called the attention to animal control as they were called out because Oliver had been attacked in his pen by the neighbors pit bull dog. Animal control asked that the owners call a vet and have Oliver checked out as he was mauled pretty good. The owners never did call a vet. Oliver sat out there with flies all over him and open wounds for 11 days till I got involved . I really could not take in anymore pigs but what could I do........I got the owners to relinquish Oliver and I took him home. The owners said they could not afford vet care for the pig because SHE was PREGNANT. It is a shame that an animal has to endure things like this. Oliver was not his name. The owners called him Stinky.........why would he want a name like that.......of course he smelled with the awful way the owners kept him. That soon changed. Oliver as he is known now received a good bath which he enjoyed and his wounds were cleaned real good. He was put on antibiotics and scheduled for an appointment to be neutered. After his neutering he continued to gain nice weight with some nutritional pig food. Clean water which he was not used to. After a few weeks of isolation to heal his wounds and take the time for his neutering to calm his hormones Oliver was let out and never fought with one pig........he seemed so happy to the Life he had come into. Oliver today is a very friendly and happy pig......comes when called and loves to just hang out with you while you are doing chores. He looks quite different today . Rooterville is a beautiful place, providing safe haven for over 100 rescued animals. We provide medical treatment and proper nourishment for unwanted, abused and abandoned animals of all species, particularly pot bellied pigs, as well as assist in the rescue, transport, placement and spaying/neutering of rescued animals. We have helped with many large rescues including the placement of hundreds of abused, neglected, abandoned or unwanted pet pigs. Believe it or not, there are way too many unwanted pot bellied pigs and we are one of only a handful of rescues that will help them. While there are many more rescue options available for dogs and cats, there are few for pigs. This is why the work we do at Rooterville is so very important and why we strive to educate the general public with respect to the true nature and characteristics of the potbellied pig and pigs in general and stress the importance of spaying and neutering them to prevent the birth of even more unwanted pets. Rooterville has many wonderful spayed/neutered pet pigs available for adoption to loving homes. Animals who do not get adopted will live their lives out here at the Sanctuary.
Often, we have helped pet pigs stay in their homes by providing adequate fencing, shelter and spay/neuter for those animals who, with our assistance, are then able to stay in their current homes. We also spend many hours providing education and support to pig guardians to help them cope with health and behavioral issues in an effort to keep animals in their current homes, as long as they are loved and will be properly cared for with our intervention and follow-up.
A large part of our time is dedicated to educating the general public on the nature and sentience of all animals as well as their need for compassionate treatment, particularly pigs, in comparison to modern factory farming, circuses, entertainment, etc. and we provide information and resources free of charge.

Fire! Fire! The skies are filling up with black smoke everywhere. It was time to get thinking what we would do with our animals in case of emergency. The biggest question was could we deal with our animals in an emergency? It does not matter if you have a pot belly or just a wonderful old dog; the question is what would you do? This mind set was a thought after the last huge fire that ran through the Yorba Linda and Brea area just recently.
I set out to ask some questions. Patty Williams, agriculture teacher for Orange High School, was a wonderful resource. She has assisted in the evacuation and rescue of large livestock with Hurricane Katrina and our local Santiago Fire. Her live stock area at the high school is deemed as an official rescue site for large livestock for the Orange County area and she has trained her students in the assistance for this. Most recently she opened up the live stock area at the high school for the Yorba Linda Fires. Her most practical advice is to create a grab and go bag. It should consist of food, water, health essentials, bedding, and vet info if needed. Next is to practice, practice, and practice the loading of the animals. Have a disaster drill! In this most recent fire they were expecting four potbelly pigs but the pigs did not make it to her shelter because they would not load.
What is your emergency plan? Where will you take the animals? Many people do not have a way to transport them. It is the owner’s responsibility to evacuate them because animal control and other rescue groups most likely will not be able to get to everyone. For example, last year several horses had to be left in the back of Dove Canyon because the owners did not listen to the evacuation warning.
I am new to being a potbelly caregiver. I have to ask questions of everyone. It’s like having a baby and not knowing what to do. I do know this…..I’m planning on taking the dog and the pig for a ride in my truck on a regular basis.

Larry Hamm over at Chelsea Lynn Designs on Artfire is a friend of many in the world of handmade, he is also the voice of The Crazy Train on Blockhead Radio. Larry has a fantastic wife Janet, and an 8 year old son Jacob who live with him in Lansing, NC deep in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Larry is a friend to everyone and just an all around swell guy. He is most definitely the "shirt off your back" kind of friend. Right now, all of Larry´s friends and Blockhead Radio are teaming up to help him out in a tough time.
Larry is a disabled diabetic who currently has lost his health insurance. His medication alone monthly is over $2,000. Larry is not receiving disability, he has not been approved yet. His wife is the only source of income and she doesn´t make enough to cover his medications. Larry´s doctors have given him an outlook of only 18 months to live if he doesn´t receive a $17,000 gastric bypass surgery as soon as possible. Update on Noahs ark surgeries this year - noahs ark pbp sanctuary

Surgeries this year...........Mary Jane was spayed and wound up doing awful........thought I was going to lose her but she rallied and is doing fine now. Leila was spayed also and had multiple problems..........had to have Vit. K injections.......was tough going but she is doing fine also.
Hannibal had to have surgery under his chin for a MASSIVE abcess that I could not cut open myself.........it was a nasty mess. Dr. Kennedy brought me out a big bowl of goop that looked like raw hamburger..........yuk. He is still not out of the woods and then Jake.........with his surgery . He is doing the best and the quickest recovery of them all. I cannot imagine the pain he was in. Kennedy took the x-rays. This is when he found the bone growing to where he was biting on it............it is a wonder he ate at all........ He seems to be enjoying life so much more now. I have been to the vets every week now for over a month in a row. Next Tues. Daisy Charlene has to go in for some wicked nasty sores on her that crust over and then start bleeding.......... Oil City Rescue Update

When we got the email from Tracy McDaniel and Pepper, we knew it would take a miracle to save these pigs in Oil City, Louisanna. Tracy and Pepper jumped right in and soon other volunteers jumped in to help. I put the word out to our groups that not only volunteers was needed but we needed funds. With the economy the way it is, we were turned down on all but one grant that we wrote for. It was enough to cover all the neutering and transport. Tracy and Steve bought food and pools and others picked up plywood and other needed materials.Then Tracy and Steve decided to go and help to round them up. Then the second surprise came when they decided to go back and help with the hauling. What troopers they were. Pepper and Kelly took care of the everyday feeding and watering until the pigs could be vetted and blood testing done. Then came the big transport days. We found homes for 6 in Cave Springs, GA and 4 more found a home with a gal named Heather in GA. Kim Pohle said she would take and help place any we didn't find homes for. Elaine and Dale West of Rooterville agreed to take and place 10. Even the veterinarian's assistant took one of the sows that delivered five babies the day they began their journey. This could never have happened without all of them jumping in to help. One little guy had a penis problem and Dr. Joan Poster of CT. decided to take him and do some surgery on him and give him a forever home with her and her family.We owe a big thank you to all of the following people who helped one way or the other. for more info about this please visit: http://www.farec.org/

Pig Parenting :Parenting requires knowledge and commitment. This is true whether the person is raising children or caring for pets. Being a pig parent is no different. The successful pig parent is one that understands the unique characteristics of the pig and is willing to make the effort and commitment to be a good pig parent. Pigs require outside time to be a pig. Pigs root, but can be trained to use a certain area of the yard, or to use a “rooting box” to satisfy their urge to root. Pigs are ranked 4th in intelligence of all animals, and are easily halter and lead trained. Probably the most important fact to realize is that pigs grow until they are about 3½ or 4 years old, and no honest person can guarantee the weight of an adult pig. Weight averages for adult pigs range from 90-150 pounds, and some pigs even top 200 pounds. Adult potbellied pigs are generally about 18 inches high.
When maintained on a proper diet (grain-based without meat by-products), the pig has no body odor and the pig's waste is odorless. It is commonly said that parenting a pet pig is like parenting an inquisitive two-year old - one that will remain so for ten to fifteen years. Pigs are also inquisitive and need toys, games, and training to keep them stimulated. The pig parent must “childproof” their house, installing childproof drawer locks on lower drawers, making sure that doors are closed and that food and harmful things are kept out of reach. For example, a pig parent recently forgot to make sure the garage door was fully closed and discovered that her pig was missing. She found the pig, and what was left of her five pound bag of potatoes in the garage.
The issue of food:
Pigs will eat just about anything. That's where the expression, “eats like a pig,” comes from! Unlike cats, who generally will stop eating when they are full,
A pig will eat itself sick. It will also, if given the opportunity, eat things that are harmful to the pig, even fatal. The proper pig parent will feed their pig a potbellied pig food, or, if not available, a hog, rabbit, horse, or other grain-based feed with no more that 14% protein. Generally, piglets under 3 months old should get ½ to 1 cup of feed a day, and older pigs 1 ½ to 2 cups a day. This amount should be divided into a morning and evening feeding. Unless the pig spends the day grazing in the yard, the diet should be supplemented with fruit and leafy vegetables. (Avoid peas, potatoes, corn, and other starchy vegetables that are fattening. Also limit fruit because of the natural sugar content.) Iceberg lettuce is good, as it has almost no calories and provides bulk. Frozen grapes and cucumber slices also make good treats for tricks well done or lessons well learned. Other good treats are air popped popcorn (plain, no butter), carrot slices, and individual pieces of dry cereal like Cheerios and Chex. The easiest way to be sure that the pig is not overfed is to measure out the treats for the day. To supplement all of this, the pig parent should also daily feed the pig a children's complete vitamin tablet (any brand is fine).
Pigs can be potty trained:
The potty box should have low sides as pigs do not like to step over things to use the potty, and should be large enough so the pig can turn around. Beware of slippery bottoms- use a non-slip rubber mat under the litter if needed. The round “dishes” used for draining water heaters make ideal and inexpensive potty boxes. Do not use clay-based kitty litter, as the pig could inhale it or eat it, both causing life-threatening medical problems. An inexpensive and absorbent material is pine shavings. Cedar is not recommended.
Be sure that you have located a veterinarian in advance of obtaining a pet pig as many vets do not see nor treat them. Having a good knowledgeable vet is vital for the pigs welfare. In conclusion, again let it be stated, a person considering a pig as a pet can be assured of a loving and intelligent pet for many years, if they are willing to learn about their pet and make a long-term commitment to pig parenthood. Forgotten Angels Rescue & Education Center Reason for Request for Funds We were alerted to a hoarding situation which was going really bad in Oil City LA. Over 30 potbellied pigs, 20+ dogs and 15 cats. We learned that many of the potbellied pigs had been taken to auction. None of the animals have ever been seen by a veterinarian and many are covered in mange. We immediately began to try and raise the funds needed and to start by having the people involved sign a release so we can remove all of the animals there. We have homes waiting for about 15 of the potbellied pigs and many of the dogs and cats after they have been spayed, neutered, blood tested, wormed and have the mange cleared up. We are moving forwarded with the hopes we will be able to raise all the needed funds. Work has begun on finding foster homes for the dogs & cats and a holding place for all the pigs while s/n and blood testing is done. We estimate that a total of twelve thousand three hundred dollars ($12,300.00) will be needed. If you can help with any part of the remaining balance, it would be much appreciated as it is desperately need to cover the balance of all vetting, pens and transportation to save all of these animals.

Your Potbellied Pig’s Diet

Potbellied pigs are omnivores, so their natural diet in the wild would include roots, veggies, nuts, seeds, berries, worms, insects, raw eggs and other little critters. Of course, you can’t imitate this diet for your pig, but you can feed your pig a variety of healthy foods. It’s a good idea to feed pigs larger meals twice a day (breakfast and dinner) and healthy snacks throughout the day.
Recommended Foods. Your pig’s diet should contain a lot of veggies. Meals should consist of a
head of cut-up romaine lettuce along with a cup of veggies, plus pellets made specifically for miniature or potbellied pigs. Vary the veggies so the pigs don’t get bored with their meals and also get a variety of nutrients. Safe veggies include broccoli, cauliflower, lima beans, green beans, sweet potatoes, corn, peas, edamame, peppers and peeled zucchini. Don’t feed your pig too much broccoli or cauliflower, however, since they can cause bloating and gas. You might want to peel the zucchini (unless they are organic) because the skin has quite a bit of residual pesticides and synthetic fertilizers in it. In the winter, if you really want to pamper your pig, warm the veggies (you can even allow the lettuce to warm up a bit) so the pig isn’t eating cold food in cold weather. In the summer, if you live in a very hot climate, feed the pig cold lettuce and cold or slightly
frozen veggies. Limit veggies such as corn, carrots and peas; the high sugar content of these veggies can cause hyperactive and aggressive behavior. All veggies should have no added
sodium, so canned vegetables are not a good choice. Fresh or frozen are best. Include
commercially prepared potbellied pig pellets in the salads, but don’t feed the pig pellets
only, since such a restricted diet doesn’t supply the nutrients the pig needs to have
optimum health. Two or three times a week, you can also include eggs in the pig’s food.
Fruit can be offered as treats on occasion or included in meals, but only once in a while
because of the high sugar content. Unsalted almonds or popcorn make a wonderful
snack. Try mixing almonds and pellets and tossing them around the pig enclosure after
meals. This extends meal time and helps satisfy pigs’ innate desire to root. Of course,
they also get physical and mental stimulation while searching for the almonds and
pellets. Alfalfa hay is another good snack and it has plenty of fiber.
Recommended Supplements. Supplements can be used to encourage a strong
immune system and help the pig overcome a particular illness or disease. To allow
the pig’s body to adjust, start with small amounts of a supplement. Before giving a
supplement, check with a veterinarian experienced with potbellied pigs to verify that the
supplement will have no ill effects. Administer the supplement in small doses for two
